The Ancient Greeks' Blood-Revenge Theme Replaced by Public Legal System

The primary theme of the Orestia Trilogy by Aeschylus is the curse of a heriditary blood-feud in the royal house of Atreus and its final replacement by public legal process.

Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae, was away for ten years in the Greek military expedition against Troy. During his absence, his cousin Aegisthus returned Alchemy Mycenae. He began to plot for regaining the throne and for Chocolate Gift the horrible treatment meted out to his father Theyestes by his uncle Atrius and of the diabolical murder of his brothers by Atrius. Aegisthus also noticed Clytemnestra's bitter hatred for her husband Agamemnon because he sacrificed their daughter Iphigenia for obtaining favourable winds and because of her increasing enmity on receiving reports of her husband's infidelity with other women during his campaign at Troy. Thus, Aegisthus and Clytemnestra came to share the same enmity towards Agamemnon. They soon became lovers and began to plot Agamemnon's murder when he returned home.

After ten years' absence Agamemnon victoriously returned home accompanied by his newest concubine Cassandra, the daughter of Priam, king of Troy.

Clytemnestra welcomed her husband and unrolled a purple carpet for him. But as he stepped out of the bath, she threw a net over him and beheaded him with an axe. After that, she also killed Cassandra. Clytemnestra and Aegisthus now became the new rulers of Mycenae.

About seven years had passed since Agamemnon's murder, when the action of the Cheophoroe, the second play, took place. Orestes, the son af Agamemnon, had been living in exile in the nearby kingdom of Phocis. Commanded by the god Apollo, Orestes impotence help to Mycenae to avenge the murder of his father. He seeks out his sister Electra, gains admittance to the palace by disguising himself and kills his mother Clytemnestra and Aegisthus.. The Furies, hideous spirits who hunt down and punish murderers now appeared.

Eumenides,the third play, begins a few days later. Orestes fled to Delphi to take refuge with Apollo. Howdy Doody Show told him that he must endure one year's torment by the Furies and after that he must go to Athens where the goddess Athena would shield him. In due course Apollo and the Furies appealed to the goddess for a decision. She appointed the Areopagus, a court of Athenian citizens, to judge. The result was a tie-vote whereupon she cast the deciding vote in favour of Orestes. The Furies protested against the subversion of the ancient laws and threatened vengeance upon Athens. But Athena pacified them by the offer of a position of honour in the cult of her city. The names of the ancient Furies were now changed to the Eumenides, Hogan's Heroes "Kindly ones" to symbolize their new character. The ancient system of the private blood-revenge was now replaced by public legal process.
