Hawaii - Hawaiian History & Hawaiian Culture Reviewed

Hawaii is a fascinating state, which many of us enjoy visiting. As such, you may want to know a little about Hawaiian history, culture and statehood. that commentary will review and events like Hawaiian luaus the Merry Monarch Festival, which are unique to Hawaiian culture.

Western influence increased, most significantly the United States' presence in Pearl Harbor, and Hawaii officially became a territory of the United States in 1898. Becoming a territory was, of course, a prerequisite for Hawaiian statehood.

Tourism proved to be the catalyst, which allowed official Hawaiian statehood. Pan American Airlines accomplished the initial passenger flight from the United States mainland to Hawaii in 1936. The maiden flight led to massive tourism to Hawaii.

Hawaiian statehood became crucial following the attacks on Pearl Harbor, and because of the Korean War. Hawaiian statehood became official on August 21, 1959; and it became the 50th state of the Union.

The Hawaiian realized a renaissance of pride in their heritage and Hawaiian culture consciousness surged in the 1970's. Ancient Hawaiian language had faded and practically disappeared because of the enormous westernization of the state.

Hawaiian Luau

Another word, which is commonly used on the mainland, is the Hawaiian "luau". It simply means party or celebration. But the Hawaiian luau is an important component of the Hawaiian culture. Hawaiian luaus have been an important part of tradition for hundreds of years. Friends and family provide honor for one another on special occasions.

There are two particular types of Hawaiian luaus that are customarily used today. The first one is just a gathering of friends and family, like it was originally done. As a matter of fact, it is the only authentic type of luau. The luau is private and without local connections, tourists are rarely invited to the event as seen with a commercial Luau.

But there is also the commercial luau. that type of Hawaiian luaus will frequently include tourists. The commercial Luaus are essentially choreographed and are usually very entertaining.

Commercial luaus typically have an elaborate buffets, which usually feature roasted pig as an entre and it is accompanied by rice and, naturally, pineapple. Commercial luaus are always complete with hula dancers for pleasure of man; plus there are Polynesian dancers that ladies ordinarily enjoy watching. Commercial luaus provide plenty of entertainment for everyone, especially when an open bar is added to the mix.

The Merry Monarch Festival may be the largest commercial luau, and was founded in 1971. Merry Monarch Festival is essentially a hula festival; it is actually the largest hula festival in the whole world.

Merry Monarch Festival honors one of the earliest Hawaiian tradition, hula dancing. It features thousands of hula dancers and attracts huge crowds. The Merry Monarch Festival event usually begins in March or April. It is to be found in Hilo, which is on the big island of Hawaii, and is a weeklong cultural event.
